prosopis juliflora (mathenge) is a common tree in the northern and coastal kenya.prosopis was introduced to mitigate the impacts of the current drought affecting many parts of the country due to climate and seasonal variation resulting vegetation loss and land degradation . since its introduction prosopis juliflora become invasive to an extent it has replaced the indigenous plants.prosopis like any other tree has its own economic value. the prosopis project in tana river and garissa county ,kenya aims to manage the plant to prevent the elemination of other indigenous vegetation,create sustainable livelihoods for communities and mitigate climate through carbon sequestration.
