Description

Mount Kenya forest over the years has experienced massive deforestation through various illegal activities starting early 1960s to the late 1990s. The illegal activities which led to massive deforestation included; unlicensed timber harvesting, charcoal burning, forest grazing and Shamba systems forms of forest cultivation. Those degraded forest lands never regenerated back and thus need for restoration through planting of indigenous tree species.

    Challenges Faced:

Over 700 hectares inside mount Kenya forest has been degraded over the the last 30 years through various illegal activities . These illegal activities ranged from unlicensed timber harvesting, charcoal burning, grazing and Shamba systems forms of forest cultivation.

    Root Cause:

Degradation of the forest spanning over the last 30 years through various illegal activities. These illegal activities ranged from unlicensed timber harvesting, charcoal burning, grazing and Shamba systems forms of forest cultivation.

    Lessons Learnt:

Community involvement will help restore degraded forest lands and thus create habitat for wild animals like elephants, buffalo's, Monkeys and birds. Such initiatives will also reduce flooding, human-wildlife conflicts, siltation of rivers and also increase water volume for many rivers originating from the forest. The project will continue providing income for community members participating in raising the seedlings and planting them in the forest.

    Recommendations:

Establishing Community Tree Nurseries where indigenous tree seedlings are raised and managed till they reach transplanting time. These Community Tree Nurseries are managed by community members who benefit through selling the seedlings to our organization for restoration and participating in site preparation through clearing, pitting, planting and after planting management through weeding. After planting the seedlings are managed till they well establish for 4 years.
